Chabad on Campus Europe & UK History
1920

The seeds for Chabad on Campus Europe & UK were planted in the 1920s by the Rebbe’s father-in-law, the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson. In a talk delivered in 1955, the Rebbe said that the Previous Rebbe “sent money to a group of Jewish students in Switzerland to establish a kosher kitchen.”
1965

In 1965, the Lubavitcher Rebbe sent Rabbi Shmuel and Hindy Lew to England, where they were charged with working with Jewish youth. Rabbi Lew recalls that over the next ten years, they arranged classes, events, and Shabbatons for countless students and professors in England. Perhaps the most famous among the attendees was Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who would go on to become the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain. A young Jonathan Sacks was at the first “Shabbaton” event in England at Cambridge University in 1968.

Chabad on Campus Europe & UK provides for the needs of every Jewish student in Europe, irrespective of background, affiliation, or level of knowledge. Each centre is staffed by a couple, a rabbi and rebbetzin, who, together with their family, provide an open and welcoming ‘home away from home’, host weekly Shabbat and holiday dinners, and offer a full range of educational and social programmes.
